Side-striped palm viper (Bothriechis lateralis). This small venomous pit viper inhabits trees in forested mountain areas of Costa Rica and western Panama. The upper surface of the head is shown here. It feeds on small birds, rodents, lizards and frogs. Reaching a length of around 80 centimetres, it has a distinctive patterning of blue and yellow bars. Photographed in Costa Rica. | |
