Interior of Mars. Cutaway illustration showing the internal layers within Mars. Mars is one of the rocky, terrestrial planets of the inner solar system, and as such is likely to have an interior similar to Earth's. Below the crust is a layer of molten rock (orange). At the centre of Mars will be a core layer (yellow-white). Since Mars has no magnetic field, it is thought the Martian core is solid, unlike Earth's liquid core. Mars has an average diameter of around 6800 kilometres. | |
