Tubular myelin in alveolar lung fluid. Transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of tubular myelin strands (dark grey, centre) found in alveolar lung fluid. The alveoli is where gas exchange occurs in the lungs. The tubular myelin strands form part of the pulmonary extracellular lining, a component of the lungs that is thought to play a key role in some diseases, especially those which interfere with the formation of pulmonary surfactant. Red blood cells are partially seen at upper left, lower left and lower right, with alveolar space at upper right. Magnification: x6000 when printed at 10 centimetres across.
