Mary Baker Eddy (1821-1910), US founder of Christian Science. Eddy believed she had rediscovered the healing methods of Jesus when she was cured of a spinal complaint by a spiritual healer. Following recovery from a severe injury sustained in 1866, she evolved a philosophy of faith healing. Her thesis, 'Science and Health', was published in 1875 and was a founding text of the Christian Science movement. She founded the Church of Christ, Scientist in Boston in 1879, and by 1960 the movement had over 4000 churches worldwide. | |
