Harriet Martineau (1802-1876), British author and sociologist. Martineau is often considered the first female sociologist. She wrote on social theory, as well as religion and economics. Other topics she published on included the role of women, atheism, evolution and philosophy. Her works include: 'Illustrations of Political Economy' (1834), 'How to Observe Morals and Manners' (1838), 'Life in the Sickroom' (1844) and 'Letters on the Laws of Man's Nature and Development' (1851). Her autobiography was published in 1877. | |
