Aestus engine testing. The engine is at centre, mounted on the P4.2 stand at the DLR (German Aerospace Center)'s test centre in Lampoldshausen, Germany. This stand, which allows firing tests in vacuum conditions, was modified in late 2001 to accommodate 'buffer' tanks (the four cylindrical structures) in order to provide a better simulation for the overall propulsion system of the Ariane 5 storable propellant upper stage (EPS). The Aestus engine, which powers the EPS, provides the final orbital injection boost for Ariane 5G payloads. Ariane 5 and the Ariane 5G version were introduced from 1996. | |
