Great Iowa Meteor, illustration. This meteor fell to Earth at 22:20 local time on Friday 12 February 1875. It illuminated the entire state of Iowa, and parts of surrounding states. The passage of the meteor through the atmosphere produced a great variety of loud rumbling and detonating sounds, with some areas of Iowa shaking as if an earthquake was taking place. Large amounts of meteoritic stone was found over the following months and in the years since. It is estimated that the Great Iowa Meteor weighed 2300 kilograms. | |
