Florence Bascom (1862-1945), American geologist. Bascom was the first woman to receive a PhD from John Hopkins University, Baltimore and the first woman to be appointed assistant geologist to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). While working for the USGS she also taught at Bryn Mawr College, a women's college in Pennsylvania, where she founded the geology department. | |
