Hydrophone. 20th-century hydrophone (underwater microphone) as used on British ships during World War I (1914-1918) and in later conflicts to detect the sound of a submarine's engines. The headphones (upper right) would be used to listen, while the microphone was lowered into the water. For a hydrophone, see image C036/0819. | |
