Euglena chloroplasts. Scanning electron micrograph (SEM). of a dying euglena releasing it's chloroplasts (green). Euglena is a freshwater unicellular flagellate protozoan. Chloroplasts are the site of photosynthesis, the process that synthesises carbohydrates from carbon dioxide and water using sunlight. The pigment responsible for photosynthesis, chlorophyll, is found on stacks of parallel thylakoids called grana. Magnification: x 7000 when printed at 10cm wide.
