Maxwell test chamber, radio anechoic tiling
Maxwell test chamber. Radio anechoic tiles lining the 9-metre-high walls of the Maxwell test chamber, used to study and test radio equipment for spacecraft. Once the main door is sealed, the metal walls of the chamber form a Faraday cage, screening out external electromagnetic signals. The arrangement and shape of the tiles minimises echoes. The spacecraft's systems are then switched on to carry out electromagnetic compatibility testing to detect any harmful interference between its own systems. This test site is operated by the European Space Agency (ESA) at ESTEC (the European Space Research and Technology Centre) in Noordwijk, the Netherlands. Image published in 2015.
