Catherine Macfarlane (1877-1969), American obstetrician. Macfarlane graduated from the Woman's Medical College of Pennsylvania, USA, in 1898. She went on to specialise in obstetrics and gynaecology, which she taught and practiced in Philadelphia. Macfarlane is best known for her work on uterine cancer screening. In 1938 she co-founded the Cancer Control Research Project in the belief that regular pelvic examinations would detect early uterine cancer. The study proved successful and lead to the establishment of the first uterine cancer screening in Philadelphia. She was the first female fellow of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia and the first woman president of the Obstetrical Society of Philadelphia. | |
