Scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Fine silica (glass) reticulate pumice formed from molten lava. Molten lava containing high amounts of gas cool rapidly to form this very light-weight and fragile pumice. Pieces of reticulite can be carried in the wind. The lava from Hawaii's active volcano contains over 60% silica (glass). Magnification: x14 when shortest axis printed at 25 millimetres. | |
