Voyager Golden Record production. Worker checking the gold-plating on a Voyager Golden Record. The records are carried aboard the Voyager 1 and 2 spacecrafts, as a greeting to any intelligent life that may find them. They give audio and visual information about Earth and its people, including greetings in 55 languages. Etched on the cover are details of how to play the record and view the images. Also included is a diagram of Earth's position relative to 14 pulsars and a representation of the hydrogen atom. The Voyagers were launched in August and September 1977 on a mission to the outer planets. Their mission is continuing beyond the solar system, with Voyager 1 becoming the first man-made object to enter interstellar space on 25th August 2012. They will reach nearby stars in 40, 000 years. Photographed on 23rd August 1977. | |
