Scenes from the war between the Romans and the Dacians in the second century AD are illustrated in Trajan's Column in Rome. This relief is associated with that conflict as there are several images depicting Dacian women, some of whom may have been warriors. In particular, the weapons in the background include a carnyx, above the shield and to the right of the axe. This trumpet-like wind instrument of the Iron Age Celts, used in warfare to incite troops and intimidate the opponents, was also used in battle by the Dacians. The apparent sadness of the woman in this relief may be due either to her capture or the grief caused by the loss of a loved one in battle. | |
