Cushion bolax (Azorella trifurcata), a south Patagonian cushion plant, is a perennial member of the carrot family. This low-growing dwarf mat-forming plant only grows to 1-5 cm high. The little umbels of yellow/green flowers are hermaphrodite (have both male and female organs) and are pollinated by insects. It is found in high exposures on mountains, growing down to the timberline, and subantarctic coasts where it tolerates a maritime exposure. It is one of the few plants of the Apiaceae family that is grown as an alpine in rock gardens. | |
