Dark nebula LDN 1768, optical image. This nebula (a cloud of gas and dust) is visible where it obscures the background stars behind it. Dark nebulae are where new stars form, protostars at the earliest stage of their evolution with insufficient energy to light up the nebula. LDN 1768 is located in the constellation of Ophiuchus. Image data obtained by the Wide Field Imager (WFI) on the MPG/ESO 2.2-metre telescope. Image published in 2016. | |
