This photo, taken on Nov 12, 1984, during the 51-A Shuttle mission, shows mission specialists Joseph Allen and Dale Gardener manoeuvring the captured Palapa B-2 communications satellite into Discovery's cargo bay. Allen, top, is holding on to the 'stinger' device, used for docking with and stabilizing the previously stranded, spinning satellite. The 'end effector' of the remote manipulator system (RMS), controlled from inside Discovery's cabin by astronaut Anna Fisher, grasps a special grapple point to Allen's right. Palapa B-2 (along with the Westar VI satellite, rescued 2 days later) was successfully stowed in the cargo bay and returned to Earth to await relaunch. | |
