Group of arranged marine diatoms from Malago Cove in California. Diatoms are tiny single-celled photosynthetic algae with a skeleton (frustule) made of silica which are found in a wide variety of shapes. They are found in both fresh and marine waters. Victorian microscopists had a particularly enthusiasm for arranging diatoms into artistic groupings. Magnification: x 55 at 10cm wide. | |
