Benjamin Berkeley Hotchkiss (1826-1885). 1889 illustration of the US engineer Benjamin Berkeley Hotchkiss. Hotchkiss was one of the leading US ordnance (artillery) engineers of his day. In the 1850s he was employed to make Colt revolvers and Winchester rifles in Hartford, Connecticut, USA. In 1867 Hotchkiss set up munitions factories in France where he developed a revolving barrel machine gun, known as the Hotchkiss gun. | |
