Cervical intervertebral disc implant. Coloured lateral X-ray of the cervical (neck) spine of a 51-year-old woman, showing the presence of an implant (purple, lower right) following an operation to repair a slipped (herniated) intervertebral disc. This was a herniation of the disc between the C5 and C6 vertebrae, which was treated with an anterior cervical discectomy operation. Slipped discs can lead to the herniated tissue pressing on the spinal cord, causing severe pain and other neurological symptoms.
