Engineering Test Reactor (ETR) installation. A worker stacks graphite blocks against the inner south wall of the ETR at the Idaho National Engineering Laboratory, USA, 14th December 1951. Graphite blocks are used as a radiation moderator or structural material in reactors. The ETR was built to support early development of nuclear technology. It was the largest and most advanced materials test reactor in the world at the time, and operated for 25 years. It facilitated the development of advanced nuclear propulsion for the Navy as well as supporting the nuclear energy industry.
