Light micrograph taken with episcopic lighting using Normarski differential contrast (DIC) of a dried emotional human tear. Mainly, tears are composed of water, salts, antibodies and lysozymes (antibacterial enzymes). Tears brought about by emotions have a different chemical makeup than those for lubrication; emotional tears contain more of the protein-based hormones prolactin, adrenocorticotropic hormone, and Leu-enkephalin (a natural painkiller) than basal or reflex tears. The structures seen here consist mainly of crystallized salt. Horizontal object size of this section: 0.6mm | |
