Kepler-1647 double eclipse, illustration. The Kepler-1647 b exoplanet and secondary star transiting the primary star. This type of simultaneous stellar eclipse and planetary transit is known as a syzygy. The existence of the planet was detected using the transit method. Planets that orbit a binary star system are known as circumbinary planets. Kepler-1647 b is similar in size to Jupiter, and is thought to be in the habitable zone for the system. The Kepler-1647 star system is around 3700 light years from Earth,in the constellation of Cygnus. The discovery, which was made with the Kepler Space Observatory, was announced on 13 June 2016 | |
