Wildebeest sparring. Two blue wildebeest (Connochaetes taurinus) locking horns during a fight. They may be males competing for territorial control of a herd of females. The wildebeest (or gnu) lives in herds numbering several thousand animals. It is a herbivore that feeds mainly on grass. During periods of drought the herds gather at watering holes, and when the rains arrive they tend to disperse again. Wildebeest are a major prey species for many of the large predators, including lions, cheetahs, and wild dogs. Photographed in Etosha,Namibia | |
