Bison. Female bison (Bison bison) with her calf in grassland. A single calf is born after a gestation lasting around nine months. It is mature after three years. Bison inhabit the grasslands and prairies of North America, living in large herds. They feed almost exclusively on tough grasses. Some herds move south during the winter to avoid snow covering their food, but others dig beneath the snow to find grass. Adult bison may reach up to four metres in length and weigh 1000 kilograms. They used to form immense herds over much of North America, but their numbers were greatly reduced as they were slaughtered for meat by 19th century settlers. Photographed in South Dakota,USA | |
