Starnose mole (Condylura cristata) burrowing under the ground. The fleshy appendages (starnose) of this mole are thought to serve as electroreceptors that detect electric fields around its prey. Moles have an acute sense of touch to make up for their poor eyesight. Their broad hands are permanently bent outwards for digging the tunnels and burrows that they live in. The starnose mole is a good swimmer, feeding on aquatic insects and small fish,as well as the worms and insects that drop into its shallow tunnels. It is found in north- eastern North America.
