White-tailed ptarmigan. White-tailed ptarmigan (Lagopus leucurus) on fresh snow. The white-tailed ptarmigan lives in the mountains of western North America, from Alaska to New Mexico. It eats leaves, buds and some insects. It is protected from the cold in its habitat by a thick layer of insulating feathers. In summer its plumage turns brown to provide camouflage amongst scrub, just as this all-white plumage provides camouflage in the snow. It lives in large flocks after the breeding season, and is a popular prey bird for a variety of carnivores. Photographed in the northern Rocky Mountains | |
