Snowy owl (Nyctea scandiaca). This bird inhabits tundra and scrub in the far northern parts of the northern hemisphere. It feeds mainly on lemmings, although it also takes gulls, ducks and other mammals. When lemming numbers decrease,as they do periodically, snowy owls move further south and take hares, rabbits and rats. The male snowy owl is almost completely white, whereas the female,as seen,is more heavily marked. Unlike many other owls, the snowy owl often hunts in daylight. It may reach a length of over 60 centimetres | |
