Three barn owls. Barn owls (Tyto alba) are nocturnal predators of small mammals such as mice and rats. They can hunt in total darkness, using sound to locate and catch their prey. Their flight is soundless so as not to alert the intended victim, which they take from the ground with their powerful legs. They live throughout the world in temperate and sub-tropical regions, and typically nest in a hole in a tree or a quiet building such as a barn. Their plumage varies in colour from the more recognisable white and beige seen here to a darker form with grey wings and a brown front. They may reach 40 centimetres in length | |
