Snowy owl. Snowy owl (Nyctea scandiaca) standing camouflaged in snow. This large owl lives in the Arctic tundra, and its thick white plumage both protects it from the cold and hides it in the snow. Unusually for an owl it is more active by day, mainly due to the extreme cold at night. It also nests on the ground due to the lack of trees in its habitat. It tends to migrate southwards during the winter months when its main prey, mice, lemmings and smaller birds, become scarce. It may reach a length of almost 60 centimetres.
