The Marine Lancelet (Brachiostoma (formerly Amphioxus)) is a small,translucent,fish-like lower chordate that shows many affinities with the vertebrates. There are about 30 species belonging to the genus Brachiostoma. Lancelets are filter feeders and live in shallow marine waters. They are usually found buried in the sand with their mouth end exposed. Food particles enter the pharynx through the mouth and are filtered as water exits through the gills. It is thought that vertebrates evolved from ancestors similar to lancelets | |
