I.Dammi has been identified as the carrier of the spirochaete bacterium Borrelia burgdorfi,cause of Lyme Disease first described in 1977. Lyme disease is bloodborne and may go through three stages following infection: stage 1 is symptomised by skin lesions,stage 2 by neurological or cardiac abnormalities and stage 3 by the establishment of arthritis. Lyme Disease is carried by I.Dammi in the north and mid-west USA,cases in Eastern USA are carried by I.pacificus and in Europe by I.ricinus | |
