Monarch butterflies. Several monarch butterflies (Danaus plexippus) resting together on the trunk of a tree. Monarch butterflies are found throughout North America, and every autumn millions of monarchs head south to spend the winter in semi-hibernation in the warm southern USA and northern Mexico. They spend this period congregated in their millions on eucalyptus and pine trees,as seen here. They mate in spring, and lay their eggs during their return flight northwards. These eggs hatch, and the adults continue the northern flight. Photographed in Mexico | |
