Monarch butterfly. Monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus) newly emerged from its transparent chrysalis (upper centre). The monarch is a migratory butterfly native to North America. They are born in the northern USA and Canada,and millions of them migrate thousands of kilometres to Mexico and the southern USA for the winter. They spend this period in semi-hibernation,before mating in the spring and laying their eggs on their journey north. Monarch butterflies have a wingspan of some ten centimetres.
