False-colour radio image of M83 (NGC 5236),a spiral galaxy lying some 27 million light years away in the constellation of Hydra. The image was made with the Very Large Array (VLA) radio telescope,New Mexico,at a wavelength of 21 cm. It shows the distribution of neutral hydrogen within the central region of the galaxy. The colours represent hydrogen densities,varying from red (most dense) through yellow,green and blue to violet (least dense). Observers: R J Allen,P D Atherton & R P J Tilanus.
