Sirius (Alpha Canis Majoris). This is the alpha star of the Canis Major (Great Dog) constellation. Sirius is also known as the Dog Star. It is the brightest star in the night sky, partly because it is one of the closest, only 8.6 light years from Earth. It is over 20 times brighter than the Sun,and over twice as massive. It is properly called Sirius A,as it is part of a binary star system. Its companion star,Sirius B,is a white dwarf star (a collapsed stellar core) that is 10,000 times dimmer than Sirius A | |
