Solar eclipse. Total eclipse of the Sun showing Bailey's Beads, prominences, and the solar chromo- sphere. The dark Moon is just covering the face of the Sun. A narrow sickle of the brilliant light of the Sun is seen through valleys and irregularities on the Moon's surface, forming what are known as Bailey's Beads. The Sun's lower atmosphere, the chromosphere,is seen as a red arc. Flame-like prominences protrude from the chromosphere into the surrounding upper atmosphere. These red prominences are made up of incandescent gas and may exceed 500,000 kilometres in length | |
