A total lunar eclipse occurs when the full Moon passes through the dark umbra of the Earth's shadow. This image shows a partial phase near the onset of the total phase. The advancing blue region of the umbra and the reddish hue at top is a result of sunlight being refracted into the Earth's shadow by the Earth's atmosphere. The colour and brightness of the moon in an eclipse depends on how much light is refracted into the shadow by the Earth's atmosphere | |
