Portrait of the New Zealand born physicist Sir Ernest Rutherford (left) and the British physicist Sir William Henry Bragg, taken by the American physicist A. Compton. Rutherford (1871-1937) may be considered the father of nuclear physics for his studies on radioactive decays and the atomic structure. In 1908 he was awarded the Nobel Prize for chemistry. Bragg (1862-1942) constructed the first X-ray spectrometer (1915) for measuring the wavelengths of X-rays. In 1915 he shared the Nobel Prize for physics with his son Sir William Lawrence Bragg | |
