Ayers Rock is located some 300 km south- west of Alice Springs in Northern Territory,Australia. It is 335 metres high with a perimeter of 9 km. Composed mainly of arkose,it is a coarse-grained sandstone rich in undecomposed feldspar. In the language of the native aboriginals it is known as "Uluru" but was later named after Sir Henry Ayers,a former premier of South Australia.
