Typhoon. Palm trees being blown in a typhoon. Typhoons (also known as hurricanes or tropical cyclones) are huge cyclonic storm systems of high winds blowing around a central eye. Most typhoons form in the doldrums, areas of relatively calm ocean around the equator. As moist air is forced upwards,a low pressure region forms that becomes the eye of the storm. Typhoon is the local name for hurricanes in the West Pacific and China Sea. Photographed on the island of Moorea in French Polynesia | |
