Mitochondria. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of sectioned mitochondria (red and yellow). This structure,found in eukaryotic cells,is the site of energy production. It has two membranes: an outer surrounding membrane and an inner membrane that forms folds called cristae,seen here as red lines. The cristae are the sites of aerobic cell respiration,where sugars and fats are oxidised to produce energy. Parts of other mitochondria are also seen (bottom right corner and bottom left corner). These are mitochondria from a lung cell
