Rate of reaction,Photo 1 of 3. Reaction of chalk with hydrochloric acid is used to demonstrate that the rate of reaction depends on surface area and on concentration. Chalk is calcium carbonate,it reacts with hydrochloric acid to produce carbon dioxide bubbles: CaCO3 + HCl -> CaCl2 + H2O + CO2. This is an example of a double displacement reaction. In Photo 1,a piece of chalk is placed in a 0.1 M solution of hydrochloric acid. In Photo 2,chalk is ground and the reaction rate is higher in an HCl solution of the same concentration. In Photo 3,again a piece of chalk is used but the concentration of HCl is increased to 1 M,resulting in a higher rate of reaction compared to Photo 1. Photo 1 of 3 | |
