A molecular model of KPC-2 carbapenemase,an enzyme produced by Klebsiella pneumoniae bacteria that contributes to antibiotic resistance. Carbapenam antibiotics are often used as a last resort when other antibiotics have failed. Klebsiella bacteria are a normal part of the human gut and do not usually infect healthy individuals, however Infection can occur in patients being treated for other conditions that require the use of ventilators,catheters,I.V.'s or who have been taking antibiotics over long periods of time. Recent strands of carbapenam-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (a.k.a. CRE bacteria) produce carbapenemase to break down carbapenem antibiotics and make them ineffective. This results in a potentially deadly infection that cannot be treated with most available antibiotics | |
