This contrast enhanced axial (cross sectional) T1-weighted MRI image of the lumbar spine shows diffuse enhancement (looks whiter than normal) of the nerve roots of the cauda equina (roots in the lumbar spinal canal) surrounding a non-enhancing round structure which represents the conus medullaris (termination of the spinal cord). This patient developed acute onset of lower limb weakness followed by ascending paralysis typical for a diagnosis of Guillain Barre Syndrome | |
