Star trails frame the erupting Kilauea volcano on the Big island of Hawaii. The red plume is emerging from a new vent in the summit crater,Halemaumau. The glow is from a lava lake within the vent. The brightest star trail at left is actually that of the planet Venus. The bright star trail at lower right that of Alpha Centauri. Kilauea is one of the most active volcanoes in the world. Its summit crater formed a new vent in March 2007 and eruptions from it continue to this day | |
