Pouchitis may occur in the remaining blind pouch and distal small intestines after total colectomy (removal of the colon) for ulcerative colitis. White speckling of the colonic mucosa (lining) from pseudomembranous colitis appears similar to that caused by the bacterium Clostridia difficile (c. difficile) in antibiotic associated colitis. It may be associated with diarrhoea, abdominal pain and bleeding. It may be treated with antibiotics (ciprofloxacin, metronidazole) and steroid enemas | |
