Sir John Fowler (1817-1898),British civil engineer and builder of the world's first underground railway. Fowler was born in Sheffield and privately educated. He trained as an engineer at a varietry of companies,specialising in transportation. He worked on several railway projects and by 1841 was chief engineer. In the 1850s and 1860s he was the egineer for the Metropolitan Railway in London,the world's first underground line that linked Paddington and King's Cross railway termini to Farringdon Street in the City. Fowler was also chief engineer on the Forth Railway Bridge near Edinburgh,a structure that still carries the main railway line north into Scotland.
