Bontebok (Damaliscus pygargus) mother and calf. This antelope gives birth to a single calf after a gestation period of between 7 and 8 months. The calf is able to stand minutes after birth and joins the herd straight away. It is weaned after roughly 4 months. At the age of 2,males leave their mother to join bachelor herds, while females remain with their mother's herd. The bontebok was nearly hunted to extinction in the early 19th century and is now only found in protected grasslands in South Africa. Photographed in De Hoop,South Africa | |
